Interschool Leadership Fellows Program

In conjunction with the Spence school, Interschool sponsors a two year leadership course for interested juniors and seniors from the Interschools.   Stressing leadership theory and then the application of what they have learned in creating partnerships between their schools and community based organizations in NYC, this program offers a unique opportunity for the selected students.    Coupling leadership with civic engagement, the program encourages students to learn more about the city they live in and how they can have a positive impact on it.    Students in 10th grade apply for the course and we aim to take two students from each Interschool school for a two year program.   We meet three times a month on Monday nights at Spence from 6 to 8 and there are field trips, retreats and overnight trips to Washington DC.   In 2011, we will be entering the third year of the program.   To learn more about the program, please visit http://tinyurl.com/leadershipfellows

Interschool Leadership Fellows Program

We had 55 applicants apply for the 16 slots in the class and we chose two students from each of the Interschools for the next cohort of the program.    We were thrilled by the caliber of the applicants and only wished we had more slots.    In the meantime, the seniors will be having a celebration on May 9th with the juniors and new sophomores and they will be presenting lessons learned in the program and sharing some of the projects they started during the program.    It is meant to be a graduation of sorts and a welcome to the new class.    Meanwhile, the juniors are planning a trip to DC for June and the sophomores will go on a retreat to get to know one another and then do a shadowing internship this summer in preparation for the class.   Several of our juniors have found internships with some of our guest speakers and the juniors are in the midst of planning for their projects which they will inaugurate next fall.     It has been a busy, successful year and we are thrilled with the progress of the program and are refining it as we learn more and have more experience under our belt.
